                          The View From Here

In the interim between the two wars

Moses found a second set of Commandments

                         angels clashed with police

                         as the heavens flashed

                         poor Bonaparte held his chest

                         recorded the first heart attack

There is no record of indigestion

                         at the Last Supper

                         but Leonardo the left hander

refused to make his pigment perfect

                         we wait with bated breath

                         for the canvas to disintegrate

                         Said Mohamed to his driver

                         the one they called Ali

let us take a little Hegira

                         from Mecca to Medina

After we get our infidel shots

                         if reservations are still available

To the hosannas of his own Requiem

before the days of golden records

                         Mozart expired in a huff

only a handful of eccentrics attended

enough to give him a pauper's funeral

nothing was ever seen like it

                         until Elvis came along

                         Late in the eleventh century

                         Normans battered the island coast

just in time to turn into Englishmen

whatever happened to the Gaels and Celts

the Goths and the little Visigoths?

                         they just disappeared

                         without even a thank-you note

                         Then something funny happened

                         along the way

everybody turned into Blacks and Whites

                         and Oriental and Jews

                         and Christians and Moslems

                         and Yuppies and Punks

a wonderful time was had by all
